I recently spoke with Laurence Winram on my podcast, Creative Soundscapes. Laurence is a professional photographer from Scotland whose journey spans both commercial photography and land art. Starting with a foundation in commercial photography, Laurence initially worked as an assistant to professional photographers before opening his own studio. Over time, his work expanded to include corporate photography, theatre posters, and collaborations with clients like Harris Distillery.

What makes Laurence’s work distinctive is his dedication to land art—a practice that involves creating art from natural materials found outdoors. Inspired by artists like Andy Goldsworthy, Laurence began exploring land art after attending the European Land Art Festival in 2018. His creations range from stacked stone formations to intricate mandala-like designs made from leaves, pebbles, and shells.

For Laurence, land art serves as a meditative, mindful counterbalance to the fast-paced demands of commercial photography. It allows him to slow down, immerse himself in nature, and appreciate the present moment, creating a sense of gratitude and connection to the environment.

Balancing his commercial work with his passion for land art isn’t always easy, but Laurence is committed to both pursuits. He highlights the importance of carving out moments of stillness and reflection, cherishing each opportunity to be creative in nature.

Through Laurence’s story, we gain insight into the powerful relationship between art and nature and how mindfulness can enhance creative expression. As he continues to explore the intersection between photography and land art, Laurence shows us the importance of nurturing inner peace and creativity in a busy world

Laurence’s desire to share his art extends to workshops, particularly with children, where he’s witnessed the joy and mindfulness that land art inspires. In a world with increasing mental health challenges, especially for young people, he sees land art as a gentle way to encourage mindfulness, gratitude, and connection.

Laurence  shares his art through photography to inspire others and build a supportive community, but his primary motivation remains rooted in the intrinsic pleasure of creating.

Laurence’s journey is a reminder of the power of art, nature, and mindfulness. By slowing down and savoring the beauty around us, we can find fulfillment in the simplest acts of creation. Through land art, Laurence has found a pathway to inner peace, connection, and joy—a gift he’s excited to share with the world.
